“Uragan” Beneath the Ground: A Dangerous Discovery by SGS Deminers

During clearance operations in the Kharkiv region, Safe Ground Solutions deminers discovered a 21  pcs 220 mm rocket projectile from the 9M27 family, designed for the 9K57 Uragan multiple launch rocket system. Its tail section with deployed stabilising fins is visible on the surface, while the main body of the projectile remains embedded in the ground.

Depending on the modification, this type of projectile is approximately 4.8 metres long, weighs around 280 kilograms, and can travel up to 35 kilometres. The Uragan system uses various types of warheads, including high-explosive fragmentation, cluster munition, and remote-mining variants. For example, a high-explosive fragmentation projectile may contain more than 50 kilograms of explosive material, while a cluster munition can disperse dozens of individual submunitions. GICHD data

A projectile that fails to detonate on impact remains extremely dangerous. Its fuze and warhead may still be capable of functioning, while damage, corrosion, and prolonged exposure to the soil make its behaviour unpredictable. Only trained specialists may assess its condition and carry out further operations.

Twenty-one such discoveries on a single site are further evidence of the scale of contamination of the Kharkiv region’s land by explosive remnants of war. Nevertheless, SGS deminers work every day, metre by metre and plot by plot, to clear these lands and return them safely to communities — for life, work, and recovery.
