SGS: informing about mine safety is about preventing risks, not creating them
In the city of Dnipro, law enforcement officers are investigating an incident at an educational institution, during which children were injured as a result of an explosion during a demonstration of ammunition. As a humanitarian demining operator, we cannot stay away from this event.
"Informing the public about mine safety is exclusively about risk prevention, not about creating additional danger. It is absolutely unacceptable to use live ammunition during training - even if they are considered to be "training", "inert" or "defused", - SGS information specialists emphasize.
Only safe layouts and information stands should be used for educational events. At the same time, we are talking about flat mock-up stands with images of explosive objects, and not life-size 3D models, which can psychologically traumatize children or form a dangerous interest in objects similar to combat.
We emphasize separately: such classes should be conducted exclusively by certified specialists in mine countermeasures, who have undergone appropriate training, know safety standards and methods of working with different age groups.
Mine safety is about caution, professionalism and responsibility. Any deviation from the standards can have unpredictable consequences.
"The safety of children does not allow experiments" - categorically concluded the SGS staff.
